Slow Loris

The slow loris (King Julian in Madagascar is a slow loris), is a quirky creature. Due to its slow metabolism, it can eat things other animals can't digest. Their favorite treat is gum from trees. They also love being tickled.

Coke and Mentos

Coke and Mentos react when the pores on the candy's surface catalyze and release carbon dioxide gas from the soda, this results in an excessive amount of foam and can cause the bottle to explode or take off.

Here is an example of the reaction going terribly wrong.

Not so sleepy

Sloths are known for being very slow movers, and quite lazy. This is actually their method of self defense so that they don't get attacked by predators. Just because they are often still and are otherwise slow, doesn't mean that they sleep all of the time. They actually only sleep about nine hours per day!

America

In honor of 9/11, why not learn something interesting about American History?

The 33rd president was Harry S. Truman. What is his middle name? His parents were going to give him the name Shippe or Solomon, the names of his grandfathers. They could not agree, so they gave him just an initial, "S."

Alligator or Crocodile?

How can you tell the difference between an American Alligator and an American Crocodile?

Well, one main difference is their teeth. American Alligators' teeth only show if their mouths are open. American Crocodiles, even with their mouths snapped shut, display a tooth on either side of their lower jaw. Other crocs can show a bristle of sharp lower teeth.

If you don't want to get close enough to them to see their teeth, you can tell the difference by their snouts. Alligators have broad snouts while crocodiles have long, tapered ones.

Hookah

Indeed, the recently published researches have showed that hookah tobacco contains a lot of the same additives as in regular cigarettes that have been related to health complications and addiction. Prof. Robert Bain of Georgia Institute of Technology’ School of Chemistry said that the studies demonstrated that one session of hookah smoking could be equaled to almost 100 regular cigarettes, because usual cigarette needs an average of 9 puffs to be smoked and one hookah can be smoked for up to an hour with almost 20 puffs. Therefore, it means that hookah is even more dangerous for health than conventional cigarettes.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."
But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

A facts a day ---- reasoning

You may find yourself wondering, why would our blog be called "a facts a day" (at least in the URL)?
FACT:
Since this is run by more than one person, there will be more than one fact some days, and no facts some other days. Average all that out, and that means there will either be one or more fact per day this blog is used (it makes sense if you don't think about it too much).
Hence, "A fact(s) a day"
